Healthy Foods For A Healthy Vagina

Updated: Dec 1, 2021

A healthy diet can reap wonders for your entire body - and that includes your va-jay-jay. We often know the right foods to develop strong bones, hair and muscles, but what foods make a vagina healthy? Here are some snacks you'll want to try to keep your snack intact. Lady V will thank you!

1. An apple a day may keep the doctor away, but it may also help boost your sex life. An article from an OB/GYN journal showed that women who ate more than one apple per day had higher levels of lubrication and sexual performance. Apples are loaded with compounds that are thought to mimic the female hormone estrogen as well as boost blood flow to vaginal tissue making it climax easier.

2. Foods rich in probiotics are a plus! These foods include yogurt, sauerkraut, kimchi and miso. In a normal vagina, a good form of bacteria called lactobacillus helps keep the vagina at a nice acidic pH to keep vaginal yeast and other harmful bacteria at bay. However, factors such as antibiotic use, uncontrolled diabetes or hormone use can cause a shift in the sensitive balance and place a woman at a higher risk of a vaginal yeast infection. Luckily, probiotic rich foods help restore this balance and ward of those pesky, itchy yeast infections. Probiotics help by maintaining a healthy vaginal pH that allows plenty of good lactobacillus to grow. The best yogurts are varieties that contain a bacteria called Lactobacillus acidophilus. Probiotics can also be found in oral tablets. The higher the strain count - the better!

3. Green tea could help prevent urinary tract infections (UTIs). Catechins within this tea are excreted in the urine when consumed. Growing research is showing that these catechins can help fight the bacteria that causes UTIs. Just don't overdo it! Too much green tea can cause health problems of its own.

4. Stay wet down there by drinking lots of water. Water helps keep the vagina moist and well lubricated thus enhancing a greater sexual life.

5. Be sure to give avocados and flax seed a try! They are wonderful superfoods that help increase lubrication and reduce vaginal dryness.

6. Oily fish such as salmon brings a huge dose of Vitamin D and Omega-3 fatty acids. While both Vitamin D and omega-3 fatty acids are good at lowering the risk for heart disease and overall good for your body in general, they also prove helpful to your vaginal health. Vaginal blood flow is increased.

Here's to eating the right things to help get your snack back.
